Waiting until all the permanent teeth are in can turn a simple correction into a more complex one. An early visit tells you whether your child needs treatment now, later, or not at all.

Phase 1 is a limited, purposeful round of treatment done while your child still has some baby teeth, usually starting around age 7 to 9. It is not about straightening every tooth. A palatal expander gently widens a narrow upper jaw to correct a crossbite and create room for permanent teeth. A traditional rapid palatal expander (RPE) is fixed to the upper teeth and adjusted with a small key at home; the Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE) is a removable alternative for suitable cases. Getting braces put on does not hurt. Teeth may feel a little tender for a day or two afterward and briefly after adjustment visits — soft foods and an over-the-counter pain reliever take care of it easily, if anything is needed at all.
